Welcome to Montana's Russell Country

Welcome to Black Eagle, Montana

Black Eagle almost adjoins Great Falls. It was named for the Black Eagle Falls on the Missouri, which in turn were named because of the many eagles seen in the area by Lewis and Clark. The town was once nicknamed “Little Chicago” because it is an industrial area where many workers from refineries and smelters live; many are Balkan by birth or descent, and for many years they retained the habits and customs, as well as the dialects, of Slavic countries. (from Cheney’s Names on the Face of Montana, Mountain Press Publishing Company) The town is near Giant Springs State Park, the site of the Roe River, the world’s shortest river, and Black Eagle Falls Overlook. In fact, from the roadside overlook one can see the town of Black Eagle just across the Missouri River.
