Welcome to Neihart, Montana

Neihart was named for one of the prospectors in this area, James L. Neihart. In 1881, silver was discovered and proved to be one of the richest in the Little Belt Mountains. The first post office was established in 1882 with Donald Mackintosh as postmaster. An estimated $3 million worth of sapphires had been mined from this area.

This historic mining town is right in the heart of the Little Belt Mountains. Try out the local creeks for some excellent trout fishing, and take the 10-mile drive north of nearby Monarch to Sluice Boxes State Park where hiking, biking, hunting and wildlife viewing are popular. Neihart also boasts excellent creek fishing and recreation opportunities. There are snowmobiling and ski rentals available at Kings Hill Pass. Be sure to visit Memorial Falls and take the nature trail which is handicapped accessible.

For winter recreation, visit the Showdown Ski Area, nestled high in the Little Belt Mountains located 25 miles north of White Sulphur Springs near Neihart. There is 1,400 vertical feet of forest-lined trails, open slopes and glades for skiers of every ability. The tip of the mountain commands a spectacular view of the Sweet Grass Hills over 150 miles to the north. The day lodge has expanded to provide a new, roomier facility that includes a new saloon, a bigger, better daycare and tons of comfortable seating.
